Alex Skorija (b.1988) creates paintings that reinterpret his surroundings and memories with an idiosyncratic touch. Working with distemper, oil, ink, and gouache on diverse surfaces, he leverages their inherent qualities to evoke a sense of obscure and imagined spaces. His instinctive color choices often favor a limited palette of balanced complementary colors, which he uses to define spatial relationships within his compositions. Fluid, tonal motifs are anchored through the methods and traditions of historical painting. His current fascination lies in the history of his Kansas City studio's location in the meatpacking district. Here, architectural elements like windows and railyards subtly influence his recent works.

Skorija's creative journey is deeply rooted in his family's artistic spirit, particularly his grandfather's lifelong dedication to cultivating an apple orchard—a beautiful, living art project. This early exposure to curated spaces, along with childhood memories of stained glass and his father's amateur cubist-inspired paintings, shaped his foundational sensibilities. Born in Kansas City, Skorija received his BFA from Washburn University in 2015. The pandemic underscored the importance of a proximate art community, leading to his return to Kansas City after developing his intuitive painting language on the family orchard. Beyond his studio practice, he works as a graphic designer for the Kansas City Public Library and runs Charmed, a small artist-run gallery.
